It was a cold dark night. Tom and Mary had been driving to the castle for about five hours. The wind was howling and in the distance they could hear the cry of the wolves in the forest. Suddenly the car came to a stop. It had broken down. ‘What was that?’, Mary asked surprised. Tom, the one who was driving, got of the car to see what had stopped them. While they were listening to the cry of the wolves, Tom had bumped into a tree trunk in the middle of the way. ‘I guess we’ll have to walk to the castle, Mary, it should take about half an hour’. Mary got out of the car reluctantly and the two of them started walking towards the castle. They could hear the cry of the wolves again but this time it was closer. ‘We have to hurry Tom’, Mary said, startled. ‘Don’t be scared, the wolves can smell fear and it will only lead them to us’, Tom said and they started to walk faster.
Tom noticed Mary shaking in fear. ‘I have an idea’, he said, and he walked towards the forest. ‘Wait! Tom, where are you going?! Don’t leave me here alone’. But Tom was already gone and out of sight. Mary didn’t know what to do and started freaking out. ‘Should I start looking for him or just wait here?’, she asked herself. She decided to wait for him and just hope he would come back soon. After 5 minutes she started to worry. All kinds of bad thoughts came up. What if the wolves had found him? What if he got lost? She heard something rustling in the bushes. ‘Tom, is.. is that you?’, she stuttered. And yes, there was Tom, with a big smile on his face and two branches in his hands. ‘Look what I’ve found!’ he yelled, as he was walking back to Mary. ‘Are you crazy?! You left me standing here alone in the dark without saying a thing about your ‘idea’ and I was wondering about what might have happened to you’, Mary shouted angrily. ‘I’m sorry, but listen up’, Tom said hastily, ‘I’m going to start a fire with these branches and then light up the candles that we brought in our bag for in the castle. That way we’ll have light for on the way and it will keep the wolves on a distance’. ‘That’s a great idea’, Mary said relieved, and Tom started making a fire.
Again, they heard the cry of the wolves. Suddenly a wolf ran out of the bushes towards Mary and Tom. Mary screamed and Tom, who had just finished lighting up one candle, held it towards the wolf. But it seemed like he wanted them to follow him. Tom started following the wolf slowly, but Mary hesitated. ‘Wait a second… Mary come! I know why the wolves were crying the whole time’, Tom shouted, ‘look, there’s a baby wolf stuck with her leg in the bushes’. Mary, who was terrified of the wolf, saw the baby wolf and immediately lost all her fear. ‘I have to help him’, and she slowly walked toward him and freed his leg from the branches. The wolf, who had been watching her, ran to his baby and they both ran away back to their pack. ‘I’m proud of you Mary’, Tom smiled. Tom and Mary walked back and they could finally continue their road to the castle.
